Designer wishes he was a dev! RogueSlide coming to Mobile?

Hi all!

On 2.22.2022 I was part of a team that released RogueSlide on Steam and Itch, and it only took us team of dads 2 years in our spare time. It was a bucket-list item checked off for me! I had been wanting to make a video game since I was an 8 year old. I have fond memories of coming up ideas with my cousin for all sorts of different games that we thought would be the best ideas.  Most involved existing Nintendo IPs and would have made for probably boring one dimensional games but nonetheless the desire was there and never really left.

So I was super proud of myself (I did all the art and animation) and my team! We had done it! We didn't have the most successful release, garnishing only about 1k in sales but that didn't really bother me too much because we were really hoping for our mobile launch to be where we made larger success.  We even had some fun interactions on twitter in anticipation for the mobile release where people were requesting it. Unfortunately though, our main developer's life had gotten busy and he no longer had the time/energy to work on RogueSlide and we decided that it would probably never make it to mobile.

Fast forward to my life at September 2024. My passion to make games still lives on inside me and with the AI getting to where it was I looked into areas of making games with AI. I played with Rosebud.ai for a couple weeks and then thought this: "This is actually probably just as hard as it would be to code the game myself.". So I made the decision to learn a new platform, Godot, which you are most likely familiar with. Since it is becoming such a beloved tool in the space I decided to start to learn it to make my own games.

It became a passion for me, I wanted all spare moments to be spent learning how to use Godot and its coding language. When I couldn't be at my computer but had a moment I was reading books on my kindle to learn GDScript or reading GAMEDEV: 10 Steps to Making Your First Game Successful by Wlad Marhulets (which is a fantastic read by the way).

During Thanksgiving break I decided that I had learned enough to get started on my own game, instead of following more tutorials. I made a list of a bunch of ideas I have had but one idea stood out among the others. Yes, the idea to completely rebuild RogueSlide in Godot and release it on Mobile! A major reason for choosing this, besides the fact that it never got the mobile release it deserves, is that I had already made all the animation and art for it! So I would not have to make anything new for it!

Well now it is the end of January and I have been working on this project in any spare moment I have, which is not too often as a full-time employee and father of five children! But I am still really happy with my progress and excited to share it here.

Here is a short clip of where I am at now

Anyways, I am looking forward to what the future will bring with this project and I will try to post updates on here occasionally, for myself really, but hope that others may read as well.
